Joanna Sykes is somewhat of an enigma, well-known within the industry having designer her own label and Matches’ in-house brand Freda, but has never garnered the kind of press attention bestowed on the young creatives Christopher Kane, Richard Nicholl, Jonathan Saunders, and the list goes on.
Sykes, as it happens designs beautiful and more importantly wearable clothes. Her debut at Aquascutum has brought her back into the limelight and the first collection, entitled English Icons, sheer silks with diamond appliques, herringbone tweed trenchcoats, a wide-leg pant with orange pop trim (very minimalist, very Celine).
All in all it was a show of taking the house of Aquascutum into the new decade, a modern version of chic country living. This time with a clean aesthetic.
